Sprained ankleSome of the most common problems seen by podiatrists are ankle sprains and strains. What is a Sprain?

A sprain means an injury to the ligaments. A stretched or torn ligament may take a few days, weeks or even months to heal completely. The ligament connects your bones to nearby joints.

In contrast, a strain occurs when you stretch or tear a muscle or tendon. Tendons connect muscle to bone, rather than the joint. Twisting or pulling these tissues can cause a strain suddenly or slowly over time. Symptoms of an ankle or foot strain include pain, muscle spasms, swelling and stiffness.

Typical sprains and strains usually require resting the injured area, icing it, wearing a bandage or support device, and taking pain relief or anti-inflammatory medication. Ongoing treatment for ankle sprains could also include exercise and physical therapy.
