Wound dressingIf you are having foot surgery, you obviously want to know how long it will take before you can once again enjoy the activities you love. It is important that you realize no two people recover from surgery in exactly the same way; some can bounce back faster while others take longer. However, the basics of recovery are often quite similar. Here is some information that should help you get a better idea of what to expect.

Rest

It is going to be extremely important that you follow your doctor’s instructions and rest as much as possible after undergoing foot surgery. It could take a few days to recover or it could take several weeks, depending on the type of procedure you had. There is a good chance you will need to use some sort of aid, such as crutches, a walker or a cane, to keep the weight off your foot so you can heal properly.

Bandages and/or Dressings

Some types of foot surgery require the patient to use bandages and dressings for quite a while afterward. In order to heal as quickly as possible, you will need to carefully follow instructions. You will need to keep the area as dry as possible, meaning you may have to cover your foot with a plastic bag when you take a shower, or keep the foot completely out of the tub when you take a bath.

Complications

One of the most important things you will need to do during your recovery will be to be on the lookout for any potential complications, such as persistent pain, chills and fever. That could mean a potentially dangerous infection is occurring. If you notice any of these symptoms, call your doctor right away.
