Running is good for you in multiple ways. It makes you healthier and it makes you feel better. On the other hand, running can make you feel tired and like any other sport, can possibly lead to injuries. The general idea is to use balance and discretion to run when you can and rest when you need to. Especially if you have an injury, you need to focus on the rest as much as the exercise.
Causes of Stress Fractures
The causes of a stress fracture from running can be as complicated as using a bad form or style of running, or can be as simple as not having the proper supportive footwear. If your daily jog causes pain in your feet, you should look into changing your running style and running shoes before you cause a stress fracture.
Stress Fracture Symptoms
The most obvious symptom is that your foot hurts. It’s not the same as a sprained ankle or pulled muscle. You can still walk with those injuries. A stress fracture will make you sit down and cry, yes, that kind of pain, every time your foot touches the ground.
Stress Fracture Treatment
Treatment for a stress fracture is the same as for a broken foot, other than a fracture may not require as much rehabilitation. Your doctor will take an x-ray to make sure there is no further damage, then put a cast on your foot and lower leg. You’re going to have to use crutches for awhile. The reality is your foot will be healed in three or four weeks, but because safety is always a priority you’ll be asked to stay off that foot for a good six weeks to assure it has fully healed.
