Ingrown toenailWhile an ingrown toenail is a common occurrence, it can pose some relatively serious problems if it is not treated early enough. With proper, timely treatment, it will be nothing more than annoyance. If you let it go, however, it could result in a potentially dangerous infection. In a nutshell, something that does not seem to be that big of a deal could actually result in the need for an amputation. In rare instances, an infection can be so severe it can be fatal.

Why an Ingrown Toenail Forms

One of the most common areas where an ingrown toenail forms is on the big toe. In some cases, when a nail is cut and grows back it grows in an odd direction – either curled down or sideways. As a result, it can press into the area between the nail bed and the flesh. Or, an injury to the nail can cause it to grow in the wrong direction. If your shoes are too tight that can lead to the problem as well. For some people, heredity can lead to the issue.

When to See a Doctor

If you notice any sign of an infection accompanying an ingrown toenail, you need to get to your doctor as soon as you can before things get serious. Swelling, severe pain and redness are just a few of the indications that an infection may be developing. Also, if you see pus or any sort of discoloration, you should seriously consider getting medical help. If you experience chills, nausea, fever, sweating or a loss of appetite, you need to get emergency help.
