A bunion can be an extremely painful deformity of the foot that sometimes needs to be removed surgically. Recovering from a bunionectomy may involve the use of special shoes or a walking cast for a few weeks, with full recovery ranging anywhere from a few weeks to about a year. Here is some information on the procedure as well as what you can expect during the healing process.
The Procedure
A bunionectomy typically involves the realignment or removal of bone and soft tissue in order to restore full functioning and to relieve pain. In some instances, small plates, screws or wires are used to hold the bones in place after an incision is made along the top or side of the big toe. The procedure usually takes an hour or more depending on the type of surgery is needed, and typically performed on an outpatient basis.
After a Bunionectomy
The time you will spend recovering from a bunionectomy will vary depending on the extent of the surgery. Some people can recover in as little as six weeks while others may take up to a year. It is very important you keep the stitches as dry as possible while you heal, so you will need to cover the foot while you bathe or shower. Stitches are usually taken out within 1-3 weeks while pins are removed anywhere from 3-6 weeks. You may need to wear a special shoe, a splint or a cast for a few weeks, but many people are able to gradually return to their normal activities starting about 6-8 weeks after surgery.
