Plantar fasciitis can be a painful way of life for anyone who stands on his or her feet all day or runs on a regular basis. This frustrating condition can range from being an annoyance to one that is so debilitating that it can be miserable to even stand up. This is some basic information on the condition, including causes and potential treatment options.
What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis develops when the plantar fascia – tissue that connects the heel bone and your toes – suffers irritation and/or inflammation due to repetitive wear and tear. People who have it can find it nearly impossible to walk or stand without excruciating pain. The condition tends to affect women more than it does men, and people between 40-60 years old tend to be more susceptible.
However, you will be at a higher risk for developing the problem if you take part in any type of activity that puts stress on your heel on a regular basis, such as dancing or running. You will also be at a higher risk for plantar fasciitis if you have flat or unusually high arches. Obese people are also more susceptible because of the stress they put on their feet due to excess weight.
Getting Treatment
It is important that you pay attention to the signs of plantar fasciitis so you can get the treatment you need to deal with the problem. For example, you should see a doctor if you experience increasing pain after you stand for a long time, such as a stabbing feeling in your heel. You may need to undergo stretching exercises and other physical therapy to help alleviate your discomfort, or you may need custom orthotics, a splint or injections.
