A crucial part of the complete healing process for a broken foot is physical therapy. Exercises to strengthen the muscles in your broken foot are usually started between four to six weeks after the injury. The stages of physical exercise for a broken foot will also include conditioning. Your doctor will provide you with the physical therapy treatment plan that best suits your needs.
Strengthening Exercises:
There are several therapeutic exercises recommended to reinstate your pain free range of motion.
Follow the instruction and guidance of your foot specialist carefully.
The following exercises are just a few examples of what might be recommended as part of your broken foot therapy
- Sitting on a chair, bend your knees in a 90 degree angle: lift your heel with toes down. Repeat this exercise 20 times. Then, lift your toes with heel down. Repeat this 20 times.
- Another exercise used in physical therapy is commonly referred to as “alphabet foot therapy”.
Comfortably position your leg on an ottoman or chair, continue this exercise for about 10 minutes.
During this exercise you write out the alphabet using your toes. You can use capital or small letters, print writing or incursive. You can spell out your name or other interesting words to keep it fun.
- Exercising your foot by doing the “towel scrunch” is a therapeutic exercise used to rebuild your extrinsic and intrinsic foot muscles(your foot contains more than 100 muscles). Regaining proper strength in these weaken muscles is important to avoid any long term foot problems.
