Hammer toe occurs when one or both of a toes joints are bent. It can start out mild but get progressively worse, as the toe joints stiffen to the point that surgery may be needed.
How it Happens
The most common reason that hammer toe develops is due to some s
ort of imbalance in the tendons or muscles. This, in turn, causes the toe to bend over time. In many instances, the condition will occur when a toe is forced to remain in a cramped position for an extended period of time, such as when a tight shoe is worn. Some people have it due to hereditary concerns, while others have it due to a previous injury of some sort.
Treatment Options
Hammer toe can be quite painful, but sometimes the pain can be alleviated by wearing a shoe that allows freer movement. Purchasing shoes with wider toe boxes or lower heels, for example, could reduce pain. But if that does not work, and conservative medical options do not work either, then your physician made recommend surgery. As long as the toes are still flexible, then the surgeon may be able to straighten them by releasing tendons. If they have become rigid, then it may be necessary to straighten the knuckle in order to return the toes to their proper alignment. A tiny pin will typically be inserted into bones in order to hold the toes in the correct position while they heal. Most patients will need to wear a special shoe after surgery while healing takes place, and are restricted from prolonged standing and exercise for about 6-8 weeks. As flexibility and strength return, patients can gradually return to their normal activities.
