Sprained FootA sprained foot can be either mildly annoying or downright debilitating, depending on how severe the injury it. If you have a sprain that results in serious pain or you cannot use the foot, get in touch with a Plano podiatrist as soon as possible. Otherwise, here are some tips on how to deal with this issue.

RICE

The RICE treatment typically works very well when a sprained foot is not a severe issue. It stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. First, try to avoid either moving the foot or putting any weight on it. Your doctor will either recommend that you use crutches, a cane or simply refrain from participating in any physical activity for a while. Next, to reduce pain and swelling, ice the foot on a regular basis – about 20 minutes, 4-8 times per day. Do not use ice for more than 20 minutes at a time, however, because that can result in damage to the foot.

The compression part of the RICE treatment plan means using a compression bandage to prevent further swelling. Make sure that you do not wrap the bandage too tightly because that can interrupt the flow of blood to the area. You can tell the bandage is too tight if the area near the wrap loses color or your foot begins to hurt or throb.

Finally, elevate the foot about 12 inches above your heart. This will improve circulation and limit swelling. Lie down on the couch and use pillows to achieve the proper elevation.
