If you are considering hammertoe surgery, you will no doubt have a lot of questions and want to know what to expect from your upcoming procedure. Here are answers to some of the questions we receive on a regular basis at Southwest Foot & Ankle Center.
What is Hammertoe?
Hammertoe is a condition that results in the toe being bent upward in the middle portion of the joint in a way that it looks somewhat like a hammer. It can be either stiff or flexible, and can result in significant pain. In some instances, it can have a substantial effect on your quality of life.
What are Some Signs I May Need Hammertoe Surgery?
Many people understandably want to avoid hammertoe surgery at all costs. They may try either changing or stretching their shoes in order to find relief, or they may wear padding around the affected area. However, if you try these and other treatments and still have pain or cannot wear shoes without significant discomfort, then you may be a candidate for hammertoe surgery.
What are Some Instances Where I Should Avoid Surgery?
If you have multiple foot issues, you may want to hold off on hammertoe surgery until they are rectified. Also, you should avoid having a procedure performed if you have a serious illness, poor circulation or any sort of infection. Before any sort of surgery, of course, you will need to have a detailed discussion with your doctor about all of your treatment options.
What Happens After Surgery?
Most people need to wear special shoes for a little while after hammertoe surgery in order to be able to walk. The length of time it will take to recover will depend on the extent of the surgery. For the first few weeks you will likely have to rest quite a bit and keep your foot elevated above your heart to reduce swelling and pain. Stitches usually come out 2-3 weeks after surgery, while pins are typically removed a short while later.
