A bunion can be an extremely uncomfortable condition that could eventually lead to the need for a trip to a foot surgeon. However, there are ways you can prevent this problem entirely, or at least keep them from getting worse.
How Bunions Form
If you develop bunions, you likely have a genetic condition known as over-pronation. When you stand or walk, your feet tend to roll inward. This leads to a deformation of the toe joint that can lead to a bunion. Women tend to have this problem more than men, and the main reason is high heels. However, flats and even flip-flops can cause the problem as well – any shoe that does not have the right amount of support can cause your feet to roll inward.
Talk to Your Doctor
You should speak with a podiatrist to see if you’re showing any signs of bunion development. It’s especially important to take your child for a checkup, because foot problems such as bunions can be prevented at an early age. When you visit, the doctor will take several X-rays to see if the toes have shifted. If there is an issue, he or she will recommend ways to address it early so that bigger problems don’t develop down the road that could require a trip to a foot surgeon in Lewisville.
Orthotics
If you use orthotics, it’s important to note that off-the-shelf brands may not protect your feet properly. No two feet are alike, so store-bought orthotics may not prevent bunions from taking place. Custom orthotics typically last several years and fit in most types of shoes you wear. You’ll need to bring them with you, however, when you try on shoes to make sure they will work.
Exercise
If you run a great deal, try to switch up your exercise routine so that you mix in some lower-impact activities such as swimming or yoga. Running can be extremely tough on your feet and may increase your risk of developing bunions. When you do run, make sure you have an orthotic in your shoe to absorb shock.
