What Is a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion cyst is a non-cancerous lump, often on the tendons or joints of wrists, hands, or feet. These fluid-filled cysts can vary in size and may feel firm or spongy. Although generally not harmful, they can be uncomfortable and cause joint mobility issues depending on their size and location.
Ganglion Cyst Symptoms
The most noticeable symptom of a ganglion cyst is a visible lump. These cysts may be soft or firm and can change size. While they are usually painless, discomfort or pain can occur if the cyst presses on a nerve. Their presence can also hinder joint movement.
Types of Ganglion Cysts
Ganglion cysts are most commonly located around the wrist and hand but can also appear on feet and ankles. Depending on their location, they might be referred to differently but are generally the same in nature.
Ganglion Cyst Causes
The exact cause of ganglion cysts remains unknown, but they are thought to arise from trauma or a flaw in the joint capsule or tendon sheath that allows the joint tissue to bulge out.
Ganglion Cyst Risk Factors
Anyone can develop a ganglion cyst, but they are most common in individuals aged 20-40 and are more prevalent in women. Gymnasts and other athletes who repeatedly stress their wrists are also at higher risk.
Ganglion Cyst Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam where the doctor may apply pressure to assess tenderness or discomfort. Light may be shone through the cyst (transillumination) to determine if it is fluid-filled. In some cases, imaging tests such as ultrasound or MRI might be recommended to rule out other conditions.
Ganglion Cyst Treatment
Treatment options vary depending on the symptoms and impact on daily activities. Observation is often recommended if the cyst causes no discomfort. If the cyst is painful or inhibits joint movement, treatments may include aspiration to drain the fluid or surgery to remove it.
Ganglion Cyst Prevention
There is no guaranteed way to prevent ganglion cysts. However, avoiding repetitive joint movements and using protective gear during high-risk activities may help reduce the risk.
