Bunion treatment options are, thankfully, plentiful. You may not need surgery in some instances, but a surgical procedure will be required in others. This is typically the case if your problem is so severe that it hinders your quality of life. Here are some of the treatment options.
Non-Surgical Bunion Treatment
Any type of bunion treatment will be designed to relieve pain and limiting the chances that any sort of complication can occur, such as overlapping toes, enlarged toe joints or friction wounds. One method that has proven to be effective is medication to reduce swelling and inflammation. If your bunion problem is minor, then you may only need an over-the-counter medication.
Another option would simply be to purchase shoes that fit better. You may also use bunion pads or shoe inserts. It will be very important, however, to make sure that they do not put too much pressure on other areas of your foot. Shoes with special insoles, as well as orthotic devices, can help ensure that does not happen.
Surgical Bunion Treatment
Unfortunately, there are some patients whose problem is so severe that surgery will be their only option. If you need a bunionectomy, it may take place either at a hospital or a local surgical center. Wires or screws may need to be inserted in order to make sure your bones are properly aligned.
Obviously, your doctor will explore all possible non-surgical options before recommending any type of surgical procedure. If surgery is necessary, you will be completely informed regarding what to expect and how long it typically takes to recover.
