Stress fractures are very small cracks occurring in a bone that are usually caused by repetitive motions or overuse, such as if you are a long-distance runner or you engage in exercises that involve jumping up and down on a regular basis. But they can also occur if you have a bone that has already been weakened due to osteoporosis or a similar condition. Here are some signs that you may have developed this problem, as well as how it is typically treated.
Symptoms of Stress Fractures
Most people who have stress fractures typically do not notice a great deal of pain at first – in fact, it might hardly be noticeable at all. However, pain will tend to worsen as time goes by, usually starting at a certain spot and subsiding when you rest. There is also a chance that you will experience some swelling in the area.
Causes of Stress Fractures
Again, stress fractures are typically the result of repetitive force, particularly in the lower portion of the legs and the feet. This results in the loss of bone cells, whereas these cells typically regenerate when you rest. But if you put those bones under a great deal of force without getting enough regenerative rest, then you may develop the small cracks associated with a stress fracture. (gofeet.com)
Treatments for Stress Fractures
Most of the time, people who have stress fractures will wear a walking boot or use crutches or a cane to keep weight off of the affected area. In some rare cases, however, a surgical procedure may be needed in order for the problem to heal completely.
The experts with Southwest Foot & Ankle have a great deal of experience helping people recover from stress fractures, providing an accurate diagnosis and then determining the correct course of treatment.
