Ingrown toenailIngrown toenails can be extremely painful and frustrating, because they are often caused by trimming your nails incorrectly or wearing the wrong shoes. There are some instances where the problem is hereditary, but in many instances the issue crops up because of things we can easily control. Here are just a few ways that you can prevent this problem from occurring.

Trimming Nails

One of the best ways to avoid ingrown toenails is to use the proper technique when trimming your nails. Always trim them straight across the top, rather than trimming in a rounded pattern. If you do develop an ingrown toenail, do not ever try to dig it out because that could make the problem even worse. Get to a podiatrist instead and have the problem treated professionally.

Shoes

If you buy shoes that are too short or too tight, that can greatly increase the chances that you will develop ingrown toenails. If you have an issue, consider buying longer shoes that provide you ample room to wiggle your toes freely.

Home Treatment

Ingrown toenails can be treated through self-care if they do not become severe. However, if you have circulation problems or you are diabetic, you should never try and treat this problem on your own. Get the proper medical attention to make sure you remain as safe as possible from any potentially dangerous infections.

If you are in good health, however, there are some things you can do to treat a milder case of an ingrown toenail. Try soaking your foot in a solution made of one part water and one part povidone iodine for about 20 minutes a day to reduce inflammation. Every time you get out of the shower or bath, apply antiseptic to prevent infection.

Please do not ignore ingrown toenails, because they can lead to significant problems if they are left untreated.
