Ankle SurgeryMany people watching the NCAA Tournament will be inspired to hit the court and put themselves at risk for suffering a basketball injury. If you are getting ready to play after a long time on the sidelines, here are some tips that may help reduce the chances you’ll be hurt.

Preparation

One of the most important things you can do is to warm up and stretch properly. Start by running or walking in place for about three minutes, and then do some jumping jacks for about a minute or so. You’ll then want to gently and slowly stretch, making sure you hold each stretch for about 30 seconds. This is vital, because cold muscles are at more of a risk of injury.

You will also want to make sure you are hydrated, because if you do not have enough fluids your body won’t be able to cool itself properly. Try to drink about 24 ounces of water or a sports drink two hours before you play, and then another 8 ounces right before the game starts. If possible, take a break every 20 minutes or so and drink an 8 ounce cup of water.

Technique

Know your surroundings at all times so you lessen the chances you will run into another player and suffer a basketball injury. Stay at your position and be aware of where all the other players are. Do not push, hold, block or trip any of the other players.

Equipment

Wear shoes that offer the proper amount of support and have non-skid soles. You should also consider wearing ankle supports to reduce the chances of suffering a sprain, as well as knee and elbow protection. Use goggles or safety glasses to protect your eyes and take off all jewelry before the game starts. You will also want to refrain from chewing gum during the game.
