Just about everyone experiences some sort of foot or heel pain at one time or another. But when do you need to see a podiatrist, and how will he or she treat your condition? Here is some information on the type of training these professionals go through, common conditions they treat, and when you need to visit one.

Training

A podiatrist is a medical professional who evaluates, diagnoses and treats conditions and injuries that primarily affect the ankle and foot. In order to obtain certification, he or she must undergo four years of medical training at a podiatric medical school and then perform a three-year residency in a hospital. Once their training is complete, they earn a DPM, or doctor of podiatric medicine degree and will then be eligible to obtain board certification in foot and ankle surgery.
