Even though plantar fasciitis is an extremely painful condition, it can usually be treated very effectively through conservative methods such as physical therapy, orthotics, injections and more. If the problem does not respond to conservative treatments, however, surgery may become necessary.
The Goal of Plantar Fasciitis Surgery
The objective of plantar fasciitis surgery is typically to lengthen the plantar fascia ligament in order to relieve pain. In some cases, the surgeon will also have to determine whether or not any bone spurs that may be present need to be removed. The decision will be based largely on the size of the spur, the direction the spur is pointing, its location, and other factors.
Open Plantar Fascia Release
The most common type of plantar fasciitis surgery is called open plantar fascia release. This usually involves the use of an incision that will provide direct access to the affected ligament. Sometimes the incision is on the inside of the foot, while other times a doctor will choose to make the incision at the bottom of the foot.
The benefit of the bottom (or plantar) approach is that is helps the doctor see not only the ligament but also any bone spurs that may be present. It can be particularly effective if the ligament has been thickened due to inflammation and a section needs to be taken out. The side approach can be effective as well, and in some instances a patient can recover quicker.
At Southwest Foot and Ankle Center, we will always use conservative treatment methods first. However, if they prove to be unsuccessful, we will clearly describe all of your surgical options to make sure you are as confident and comfortable as possible.
